I just found a bunch of drawings by a WWII Pvt. Kay M. Wiest of military individuals and scenes on the African Gold Coast from late 1944 to early 1945. We also have a few pictures of her doing scetches at a leper colony. Has anyone heard of this artist? Not sure what to do with these. Contact eb-kc@comcast.net if you have any info.

I came across over 50 of these prints/lithos that were issued as war bond incentives through Abbott Labs in Chicago. They are dated 1945 and are in great shape and could be framed. If anyone is interested in them please e-mail me at eightfishies@sbcglobal.net Go to PBS.org and search 'They Drew Fire' to see more examples of these pictures.
Thanks!

Just found this post, and I'm so glad I did! My late father was a field doctor/surgeon in the European Theater. He was awarded a Bronze Star for a courageous and very focused/timely triage during a particularly deadly battle. The result was that more lives were saved than expected. As a Mennonite, he refused to, and asked not to, carry a gun, and was granted that request. He bravely served our country, yet never had to compromise the heartfelt beliefs of his faith. He never spoke of his service (and we didn't ask), so I was most interested in the artwork. It was a very moving experience for me, and I was grateful for this "window" into his past. War is nothing but misery and sorrow, and Dad knew that all too well. Thank you!!!

I have a watercolor painting a German artists painted of my father . The artist was prisoner of war. He claimed to have paintings in museums, although i can find nothing about him. The painting is very vibrant and when i had it framed a teacher of watercolor said it was the best painting he had ever seen. The painting is signed Georg Yunther or gunther!Berlin Naumberg 1945. Can someone direct my search to this artist? been searching for months. I believe he was in his fifties at the time. Thankfull for any reply Dana

I am currently working on another documentary film that spotlights artists in World War II. It's called The Ghost Army It is about a deception unit that used rubber tanks, sound trucks, and playacting to fool the Germans across the battlefields of Europe. Many of the men in the unit were artists recruited from NY and Philadelphia art schools, who literally sketched and painted their way across Europe. The unit was an incubator for artists and designers, a number of whom became well known after the war, including Ellsworth Kelley and Bill Blass. Check it out!

Just to let you know, the Australian government has maintained war artists in all major conflicts it has been involved in. See the Australian War Memorial site
here.

There is also another Australian artist, George Gittoes, who visits trouble spots around the world to paint and draw. Not as a voyeur or a tourist, I should add, but more as a witness.

There is also an excellent book entitled W.W. II by James Jones which used the work of the same artists to illustrate its text. It's out of print at the moment, but worth looking for.
