I watched the Uk broadcast thanks to torrents earlier this week, great series. Andy Serkis did an awesome job as Van Gogh! The scene of him doing his Golem face while eating paint was hillarious. I was disappointed too that they chose Rothko of all people, I was hoping that they'd use Dali. I can appreciate the artistic merits of the ceiling in any random public restroom better than a Rothko painting.

Why they had to show Van Gogh eating a tube of Cadmium Yellow, including the metal tube wrecked it for me :(

Charley - I watched most of the series when it was first broadcast in the UK and while uneven, the programme on Rothko was actually fascinating. It actually got me into the Tate Modern (not my favourite gallery) earlier this year to see the Seagram Murals as a result.

I didn't check out all your links but you might also want to take a look at the BBC website devoted to the programme

My history of art teacher in my 6th form brought in the power of art dvd boxed set and I have watched the Van Gogh, picasso and caravaggio episodes, all of which are brilliantly engaging and thoroughly enjoyable. I am eagerly awaited my own boxed set which I've ordered from Amazon last week.
Love the blog, i always look forward to getting back home to read it.

A friend recently introduced me to your blog. I'm looking forward to watching the Power of Art series on PBS tonight. Thanks for that info. As far as Rothko's place in the series, perhaps they were thinking of his work as a natural progression from the late paintings of an avant-guarde Turner with his direction in color abstraction. I'll be very curious to see how the program treats the relationship of this selection of artists.
