(( learning the underlying technology (HTML and CSS) rather than relying on some propriety solution.))
I need to see the bones. I hate dreamweaver. I think it is hard to be realy creative with programs that say "just trust me".

Yes. I do all of my work on a Mac, but I have a Windows machine specifically for testing pages in browsers from the Giant Software Company That Shall Not Be Named, so I have tasted the Dark Side.

Sounds like you feel the same about the "Super Gigantic Software Company That Shall Not Be Named" as I do...

don't tell me, you have a Mac?

This is one well written article! I think that the idea of building a site for many non-technically oriented people can be very daunting so they hire it out.

There is no software on the market that is really pretty simple to use and just about anybody can make a site that looks nice with minimal effort.

While it is nice to know things like php and css some people would be better off using a site building package. Less headache and quicker results.

My web design never gets beyond iWeb, although I redesign the template pages to keep site interesting. But I noticed in John Gruber's Daring Fireball blog today a tool called Litmus. It's sponsoring his blog right now, but still the tool would seem to be useful to any one who is trying to create a site.

John's description:
"How it works: You give Litmus a URL, and a few seconds later it shows you exactly how it renders in a slew of different web browsers. If you’ve ever tried testing a web site for compatibility against multiple versions of Win/IE alone, you realize how useful this could be. Multiple browsers, multiple OSes, all at once."

Excellent article should I ever to stray from the iWeb path.

Thanks, Bruce! I knew you had recommended something and I couldn't remember what it was. I've added it to the list of Mac editors in the main post.

<a href="http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/" rel="nofollow">Rapidweaver</a> is a Mac-specific WYSIWYG editor that is template based, holding out the promise of easy, quick development and a certain level of consitency within a site, which some may find confining, but is generally a Good Thing. You can download a free trial version.

Other readers should check out Bruce's site, <a href="http://monkeyrobotangel.com/" rel="nofollow">MonkeyRobotAngel</a>, which includes a gallery of his work as a tattoo artist, stained glass artist, cartoonist, painter and illustrator.

Hi Charley!

Another great essay on web design, ( I laughed out loud three times, especially on the TPS report gag)..

I wanted to share one more option for Mac users, Rapidweaver. I was very frustrated with web design stuff until I got this cheap ($50) and powerful software. It's a WYSIWYG editor, with LOADS of options.

I just got my barebones site up with a modified third party theme, and I'll be adding more soon, but I'm very happy so far!

(I also love Dreamhost, my $10 a month, 145GB/1.5TB, carbon-neutral, employee-owned hosting service)
