Thanks for the comments.

Yes, I forgot to mention the music, both "official" groups, hired by the Old City Arts Association, and the "unofficial" street musucians, that add to the festival atmosphere of the events; as well as the "unofficial" artists and crafters who set up their wares along the sidewalk on the lower end of Second Street, in what I jokingly refer to as the "Salon des Refusés".

As a student at Penn, I second Meg's comment. Frist Friday is awesome. I love hearing the street music/pro acts that perform in and out of the galleries.

I am a student at Philadelphia University and was required by an art history teacher last year to go to First Friday and write a paper on whichever artist I found most interesting. I went to Lineage Gallery and saw Blaine Fontana, which I really, really enjoyed. I saw he had a gallery show there again almost a year later (last month) and took my two roommates with me to the gallery.

There is such a huge change from what it was last year to what it is now. There are so many young people and people in generally flowing all over N Second Street. NY and LA are known for their creative culture, but going to First Friday has made it obvious that Philadelphia is crawling up into the competition.

The amount of street artists setting up on the sidewalks to sell their own work should be noted as well. The whole culture of first friday is just amazing, I can't even begin to explain how great it is.
