This piece is in the collection of the Getty.

Though the paintings themselves are in the public domain, the Getty's photographs of it are not. You would have to talk to them (i.e. $).

This Carmontelle painting would look great on a website that is being designed for a client of mine. How can I obtain the rights to display it on the site? By the way, your site is outstanding. Thanks, Peter

I don't live far from the Getty. It looks like an interesting exhibit to check out. Making a project derived from this precursor of cinema is tempting. If you don't have access to animation on a website, I wonder if clicking on a landscape with progressing jpegs behind a stable frame, might not do a nice job of imitating motion. I think I might give it a go on my site for that touch of pre-computer age technology. Very anxious to see the film at the Getty on the kinds of stories Carmontelle applied to his artwork.
