		<description>I remember reading that Carolus Duran was known for the way he would have his students lay down a mosaic of patches of color, without  too much blending. He's one of the transitional figures between Academic and Impressionist treatments. 

You mention his love of Velasquez--Regnault tells the story of how he would behave strangely in the Prado while copying the master. He would move about wielding his brush like a sword, and muttering like a maniac trying to speak to the ghost of Velasquez.</description>
