Hmmm. I didn’t compare dates, but I did get the impression from the article in the Times that the doctors studying her case attributed her intense pursuit of art to the action of the disease on the brain, and has associated her situation with other recorded cases.

actually — I’ll make a correction. the new york times said she decided to take up art *after* her son recovered, that she got a sudden urge (the disease?). the patient art gallery says that it was *while* her son was in recovery — in fact because of her son — that she took up art.

according to two articles you linked to, she has been an exhibiting artist since 1987, but didn’t develop the disease until the late 1990s. It notes that she left her academic position and started painting after her son was in an auto accident. hardly what I would call a “passing interest” in drawing, if she was a professional studio artist for almost a decade first.
