		<description>Speaking about &quot;the extraordinary way Vermeer has used delicately applied touches of pure white&quot;, here I am in Rome experiencing the same little miracles with the Woman with a Pearl Necklace on temporary loan. This is the first time I have been able to view the painting at any length and it seem to me that if Vermeer had painted only this work, it would have assured him lasting fame. I have yet to 

In any case, this work reproduces very poorly, all the detail in the heavily shadowed are is lost while there is quite a bit of activity. The pull out table, which Vermeer included many times and it likely to have been under the blue tablecloth of the Lady Writing as well, is painted with such subtlety but with a very sure touch. The paint seems to have been breathed on rather than applied with a brush. The slate-blue tablecloth is lighter than in repros and the white wall defies description.
