Thanks, Peggy.

Here's the shorter URL for that page: http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/brush.htm

Wyeth and Schoonover illustrated many similar subjects, which were popular in adventure stories of the time. Both painted several paintings of indians in their canoes, though I think Schoonover returned to the subject more often than Wyeth, as it was a particular favorite of his. I'd be hard pressed to say which predated the other.

Hi and thanks for the great posts! Having just read your post on Andrew Wyeth, I googled N.C.Wyeth which led me to the following site on George de Forest Brush and N.C.Wyeth. The painting by N.C.Wyeth at the top of the page struck me as having a tremendous amount in common with the Schoonover painting you put with this post, and of course the site is saying that N.C.W. owed a lot to de Forest Brush. Continuity! Here is the site URL which is huge. Sorry. I don't know how to embed it in a comment! http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/wyeth5.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/brush.htm&h=450&w=395&sz=21&tbnid=zh_9Dyj_pqa8SM::&tbnh=127&tbnw=111&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dn.c.%2Bwyeth&usg=__NJ6DTXZY9l_0qbToaN51A-41waY=&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=1&ct=image&cd=1

My father lived near Schoonover as a little kid and said he remembers seeing a birch bark canoe hanging from the ceiling of the studio.

Thanks, Marcel. It's unfortunate that Schoonover's illustrated editions haven't been as widely reprinted as Wyeth's and Pyles.

Excellent write up on a great American artist. One of my prized books is the Schoonover illustrated Robinson Crusoe.
