I'm convinced, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the two portraits (including the guy wearing a hat) are of Diego Velázquez. They may or may not be self-portraits, but regardless, the images portray Velázquez.

This guy was the first impressionist ever... I couldn't believe it the first time I saw original paintings of him in the National Gallery of London.
Great post as usual.

The Met is indeed blessed.

This gem is a delight whether or not it's a self-portrait and regardless of whether Velazquez painted it himself. It certainly is more appealing in its restored state. The rakish angles of the shoulder seam, his collar and that dandy little mustache play off mischeviously against the sitter's insistent gaze, a gaze so instense that it makes us suspect self-portraiture.

My favorite Velazquez paintings, though, are the Met's Juan de Parera and London's Rokeby Venus. Velazques on a bad day was better than nearly any on his best.
